About this course
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 place a legal duty on employers to provide Asbestos Awareness training to any staff who could discover or disturb asbestos as part of their day-to-day work. This course helps to meet that requirement, and provides staff with the essential information they need to protect themselves.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral mined from rock. When mixed with other materials, it serves to enhance them by making them stronger, heat resistant and weather resistant amongst other things. It was an incredibly useful building material and was used in a wide range of building products from the mid 20th century through to 1999.
However, when asbestos fibres are inhaled they can cause irreparable damage to the lungs, and is responsible for over 5000 deaths every year. For that reason, asbestos was banned at the end of 1999. However, it still remains hidden in many buildings and if damaged, workers could still breath in the deadly fibres. Construction workers working on refurb jobs, electricians and plumbers are at particularly high risk.
This training will help you to avoid disturbing asbestos in the first place, so you can protect yourself.
Who should do this course?
This course is suitable for anyone who works on buildings built before the year 2000, and as a result could potentially discover or disturb asbestos materials.
This includes:
- Most construction workers who work on refurb jobs.
- Work supervisors.
- Electricians.

It’s important that you are able to protect yourself, your colleagues and your family from exposure to asbestos fibres. If asbestos is released into the air, it can be inhaled by many people, and be carried home on clothing.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations place a legal duty on employers to ensure employees have the appropriate knowledge to protect themselves, by attending asbestos awareness training.
The regulations also place a duty on anyone responsible for a non-domestic premises (workplace) to ensure that people who visit or work on the building are not exposed to asbestos.
This course plays a key role in providing you with the knowledge you need to protect yourself.
