Abrasive Wheels in Construction

Abrasive Wheels in Construction is an essential course for anyone planning to use disc cutters or grinders on construction sites.

Detailed information on grinding / cutting wheels, and operator training requirements can be found in the HSE document HSG17 – Safety in the use of abrasive wheels.

The course covers the following topics relating to grinders, disc cutters and blades:

• What is an abrasive wheel?
• The guidance document we use to deliver the course.
• Legislation associated with disc cutters and grinders.
• General hazards associated with the use of these machines.
• Personal Protective Equipment required for use of abrasive wheels and diamond blades.
• How to identify different types and wheels, and the associated markings.
• Care and inspection of the machine and blades.
• Practical assessment – inspecting of the machine, inspecting the blade, and mounting the blade.
• Multiple choice end test.

How we deliver the Abrasive Wheels course.

Firstly, get in touch with us using any of the options below, so that we can discuss your requirements. We’ll also arrange where and when you would like to have the course delivered.

After the course is booked, we’ll email you confirmation and full instructions relating to the course. To deliver the course on your premises, we only need a quiet room with enough seating space for all the delegates, and we will provide all the other equipment we need.

On the day of the course, we will arrive before the course starts so that we can setup our equipment. We deliver this course mainly using powerpoint slides and group discussion. There are also some exercises to do.

About half way through the course, we’ll have a 10 minute coffee break.

Once we have presented all the slides, we’ll get into the practical demonstration which covers inspection of the machine, inspection of the blade and mounting the blade on the machine. Each member of the group is observed by the trainer individually to make sure they follow the instructions.

On successful completion of the course, each delegate will receive a certificate of training. But please remember, it’s the responsibility of the employer to deem each person competent to select, mount and use abrasive wheels.
