Prior to commencement, a COSHH assessment shall be conducted for each substance. This assessment will identify potential hazards and outline control measures. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) must be obtained and reviewed for all substances.
Hazardous substances must be stored in a designated, secure area away from direct sunlight and sources of ignition. Containers should be clearly labelled and kept sealed when not in use to prevent accidental spillage or contamination.
Personnel involved in mixing compounds must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, goggles, and respiratory protection if necessary. Mixing should occur in well-ventilated areas to minimise inhalation risks.
In the event of a spillage, work must cease immediately. The area should be isolated, and spill kits must be utilised to contain and clean up the substance. All waste material should be disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations.
All operatives must receive training on the safe handling and use of hazardous substances, including emergency procedures. Regular toolbox talks will reinforce safe practises and update workers on any changes to procedures.

Waste management
Waste materials, including stone offcuts, dust, and packaging, shall be segregated at the source. Designated waste containers will be provided on-site for different types of waste, clearly labelled for easy identification. Stone waste shall be collected separately from general construction waste to facilitate recycling and reuse.
All waste containers must be stored in a designated area, away from pedestrian routes and access points, to prevent obstruction and ensure safety. Containers should be covered to prevent dust dispersion and contamination from weather conditions.
Stone waste shall be transported to an authorised recycling facility where it can be processed for reuse in other construction projects. Non-recyclable waste must be disposed of at a licenced waste management facility. All waste transfers must be accompanied by appropriate documentation, including waste transfer notes, to ensure traceability.
Efforts shall be made to minimise waste generation by accurately measuring materials required for the masonry works and reusing offcuts where possible. Regular toolbox talks will be conducted to raise awareness among workers about waste minimisation practises.
The site manager shall conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with waste management procedures. Any non-compliance or issues identified must be reported immediately, and corrective actions implemented. Stone masonry activities, particularly breaking walls and mixing compounds, can generate respirable crystalline silica dust. To mitigate this risk, all operatives must wear appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE) with a minimum assigned protection factor (APF) of 20. Additionally, water suppression techniques shall be employed during the use of demolition hammers to minimise dust generation. Regular monitoring of dust levels will be conducted to ensure compliance with the Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL).
Handling and storage of stone materials and equipment pose significant manual handling risks. All personnel must receive training in proper lifting techniques and use mechanical aids where possible. Team lifting should be employed for heavy or awkward loads to prevent musculoskeletal injuries.
The use of demolition hammers can expose workers to hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Operatives must adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines for tool usage and take regular breaks to limit exposure. Vibration exposure will be monitored, and records maintained to ensure compliance with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations.
Contact with cement-based compounds during mixing and construction can cause skin irritation or dermatitis. Personnel must wear suitable gloves and long-sleeved clothing to protect against skin contact. Barrier creams should be provided, and washing facilities must be readily accessible for immediate decontamination.
The operation of demolition hammers and other equipment may produce noise levels exceeding the action values specified in the Control of Noise at Work Regulations. Hearing protection must be worn by all operatives in designated high-noise areas. Noise assessments will be conducted, and measures such as equipment maintenance and use of quieter tools will be implemented where feasible.
Regular health surveillance will be conducted for all personnel engaged in stone masonry works to detect early signs of occupational health issues such as HAVS, respiratory conditions, or dermatitis.
